Sophal Nhep

Advisor

Sophal Nhep was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and arrived in the United States as a refugee in 1975. After the Khmer Rouge regime, he helped his brothers, sisters, and friends immigrate to America, assisting them in finding jobs and housing.

Sophal attended the University of Minnesota from 1975 to 1978, majoring in Computer Science. He then went on to own Best Steak & Gyros for 30 years, located at Chicago Avenue and Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. During this time, he partnered with Project for Pride in Living and the City of Minneapolis to help reduce crime and boost the local economy in the Phillips neighborhood.

Sophal joined CAPMN to mentor, teach, and provide guidance to the younger generation, with a strong focus on preserving Khmer culture. He currently lives in Shakopee, Minnesota, with his wife. They have three adult children, two of whom work in Information Technology.
